THE HUMAN SIDE OF PROJECT CONTROLS
ANXIETY
IS NOT A
FORECAST
How a worried planner turned a feeling into a decision.
The milestone was Monday.
The decision could not wait.

AN ILLUSTRATIVE PROJECT STORY
THE QUESTION IN THE ROOM
A DIFFERENT KIND OF CONFIDENCE
Imagine a Thursday programme review. The dashboard
is green. Site work starts on Monday. One planner is
still looking at the design approval milestone.
For three weeks, the update has been the same.
“Nearly there.”
She feels anxious. Rather than predict a delay or
pretend she is comfortable, she asks,
“What must be
agreed today for Monday to remain realistic?”
The design lead checks the remaining comments. The
construction lead confirms what the crew needs. The
planner follows the dependency into the next package.
They find an assumption nobody has tested. The
programme carries an approval date, but the final
approver has not confirmed availability. The team also
needs time to brief the crew after release.
Now they have something to work on. Confirm the
approver. Check the briefing duration. Test Monday’s
start and agree when an alternative must be
authorised.
Her anxiety did not prove the programme was wrong. It
prompted a question. The evidence, rather than the
feeling, shaped the response.
That is the constructive turn for project teams. Give the
concern a clear description, then investigate it. “The
handover worries me” becomes
“Which acceptance
requirement remains unresolved, and who can
confirm it?”
¹
Keep the risk rating tied to evidence. A concern may
reveal a genuine gap, or the check may show that it is
already covered. Both are useful answers.
Where action is possible, name an owner and a due
date. Where the decision sits elsewhere, take the
evidence to the person who can make it. Agree a
review point instead of repeatedly checking the same
information.¹
By the end of the meeting, the planner still has no
guarantee. She has a named owner, a check and a
decision time.
Her concern now has somewhere to
go.
